A Celebration of Faith, Community and Perseverance

What do you do when the London Marathon runs past your church? Blackheath & Charlton Baptist Church (BCB Church) use it as an opportunity to declare the Gospel and make Christ known. They tell us more....

The streets were alive with energy, determination, and the rhythm of thousands of runners, yet amid the marathon’s excitement, the presence of BCB Church quietly shone. This annual event offers a unique chance to witness Christ’s love in action, reaching people physically, emotionally, and spiritually beyond our walls.

From the first cheer to the final stride, the atmosphere mirrored the fellowship we share in Christ. Simple gestures; tea, coffee, cakes, and warm smiles, sparked conversations, and meaningful connections. Every act of hospitality reflected the gospel: generosity, service, and joy, showing each runner and passers-by that they are seen, valued, and supported.

This year, the spirit of community was especially moving. A community member returning for his third year, donated £20 to the church. Another community member returned and presented a birthday card to a church member who had celebrated her birthday the previous year. Runners responded with smiles, waves, claps, clasping hands in prayer while quickly turning to face the towards us and, even joined in singing, revealing the joy our presence inspired.

The marathon reminds us that small acts of kindness leave lasting marks. A cheer can revive weary legs, a song can lift tired spirits, and a remembered birthday can make someone feel cherished.

By walking, serving, and celebrating together, we make Christ’s love visible in every gesture. Through this service, BCB Church expresses gratitude to the runners and demonstrates that our fellowship and faith are alive, compassionate, and rooted in the teachings of Jesus.
